CURRENT EDUCATION PROJECTS
- Boresha Elimu Project.
This is a special education improvement project. The project is sought to be implemented by FAYO in collaboration with education stakeholders and donor agencies. The project is focused on the improvement of education infrastructures like school buildings, school water supply and sanitation development, the provision of the learning equipment and alike mostly in rural areas in the Zanzibar Archipelagos. of Zanzibar.
The project aims to improve the provision of education services to the communities in Zanzibar. In the end, this project will increase illiteracy and academic achievements to more than 80,000 pupils who hail from the poorest families in rural areas
- Elimu Bora Project
Elimu Bora Project is a distinctive kind of project in Zanzibar that concentrated on supporting and empowering the teaching profession to teachers through opportunities for continuous development, shared understanding and accountability. The goal of the project is to have competent, qualified and certified teachers and school leaders who are current in their teaching profession. As an integrated part of this project, teachers are supported, engaged so to be effective and committed to the all-inclusive development of their students. Elimu Bora Project will develop regional standards for school leadership, management and provide professional development for school leadership. The program will focus on supporting middle and senior managers who oversee teachers.
The teachers will eventually meet the needs of students through teacher Center Programs (TCPs). The project outcomes are (i) Atleast 88.32 teachers and school leaders in Zanzibar are qualified and skilled professionals who are able to demonstrate their competencies against approved standards. (ii) All teachers and school leaders are supported, through a range of modalities, in developing new skills and knowledge to create better outcomes for students. (iii) The teaching profession holds status in Zanzibar leading to parents and the community having unreserved confidence in teachers and schools
- Mwalimu Wetu Project
Mwalimu wetu project is a teacher-centered social and economic development project. It is principally designed with the attention of empowering school teachers to teach effectively with high levels to bring the best teaching outcomes. The project is especially targeting at reducing social and economic constraints that hold back the efficiency and effectiveness of Zanzibar teachers in their teaching processes. The project aims to improve the social and economic development of teachers in Zanzibar through the creation of several alternative income-generating activities together with the improvement of their social wellbeing through different initiatives. It is sought that the success of the project will improve the teaching and learning process in Zanzibar Schools.
CURRENT HEALTH PROJECTS
- Mama initiative Project
This project focuses on reducing the maternal and mortality rate of childbirth in Zanzibar through Empowering Pregnant Women with Mobile Health Care. The overall objective is to employ a comprehensive systematic approach in reducing the mortality rate of childbirth through ICT devices, seminars and other ways of education.
The project will involve the following key components:-
- Access to Maternal, Newborn & Child Health Information through Mobile Messaging Service
- Access to Mobile Devices by Pregnant Women
- Access to Communication with Health Workers & Facilities
- Empowering Community Health Workers through Access to Information & Training
- Access to Skilled Care During Childbirth
- Afya yetu project
This is a special five years Community and Family Health Care Services improvement project which is planned to be implemented in Zanzibar. The objectives of the project are to (i) improve the access to and the quality of, preventive and promote health and nutrition services among poor and vulnerable populations in Zanzibar; (ii) strengthen the operational capacity of the Ministry of Health (ZMoH) through the rehabilitation of health centers, and (iii) ensure financial support in case of a public health emergency. In the end, this project will deliver health services to all citizens in Zanzibar.
- Zanzibar students’ eye screening project (ZSESP)
This project intends to improve the provision of health and education to disadvantaged students especially those who are living in rural areas with poor financial status. The project plans to cater for the healthcare and education needs of more than 100,000 disadvantaged students who hail from the poorest families in Zanzibar and help them avoid blindness. This project provides eye examination, reading glasses, surgical treatments and other medical consultancies. Hence, the project will accomplish its purpose of helping poor students to access their education demands.
CURRENT LIVELIHOOD PROJECTS
- Uchumi Wetu Project
This is a specific project based on community economic empowerment initiatives. It is about securing the funds from donors around the world to increase the CBOs and NGO’s engagement in community economic empowerment programs in Zanzibar. The intended beneficiaries are community-based organizations CBOS and Non-governmental organizations throughout Zanzibar that are actively leading effective and responsive local community economic development initiatives. It will be in the form of grants giving to the community based and NGOs on the basis of the quality of the proposed projects and its likelihood to deliver sustainable benefits for the community economic development. It is expected that the project will strengthen the leadership, operational capacity and resilience of community-based organizations, and improve their engagement in the preparation, monitoring and implementation of community economic development programs, as they impact the lives of local communities.
- Supporting Agricultural Extension Services to enhance Production and Marketing.
This project will promote an Integrated Sustainable Agricultural Production through upgrading agricultural production machinery, installation of solar-powered machines, construction of post-harvesting storage facilities, and empowering group members to conduct market research for their products. The program will improve food security and income generation to overcome poverty and starvation.
- Wakomboe Project
This is a four years project. It is about the creation and coordination of entrepreneurship clusters, business groups and professional job units of Widows, Rural Women, Women with Disabilities and the most marginalized population who are tremendously suffering from poverty and poor living conditions in Zanzibar. The aim of the project is, to increase income levels and liberate people from poverty and improve the livelihood of the targeted population. It is expected that the project will reduce poverty and improve the livelihood of more than 50,000 women groups through engaging in various entrepreneurship and income-generating activities.
CURRENT ENVIRONMENT PROJECTS
- Utafiti Mazingira
On its formalities, ways of responding to climate change impact, FAYO has developed concepts and ideas for this environmental management project. The project is planned to be conducted in Zanzibar Archipelagos based on environmental development and management plans. The objectives of the study are to prioritize geographically and thematically the actions to promote sustainable coastal livelihoods and ecosystems for the betterment of sound environmental conservation and management in Zanzibar. The results comprise proposals for measures for coastal management and climate change adaptation in which the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, NGOs, and donors can use to guide their support and investments over five years.
- Mwambao development project
Mwambao development project is typically an environmental project concentrates on enhancing Coastal and marine Ecosystems Conservation to adopt climate change impacts in Zanzibar. It is targeted to be implemented in different coastal areas covered in Zanzibar from South to North and East to West. The main objective of the project is to conserve Networks of Zanzibar significant marine protected areas and their sustainable use zones. The project will work towards this goal by supporting local participation in natural resources management, integrating socio-economic and other cross-cutting issues and promoting institutional and resource user behaviors that are appropriate for the long-term management of the Zanzibar Seascape. The project is, therefore, focuses on the response to climate change impacts thereby improve the livelihoods of coastal residents through sustaining the flow of environmental goods and services to reverse the trend of environmental destruction of critical coastal habitats
- Innovation of community ecological technology to improve environmental conservation and management
This is a two years project. It is about the Innovation of community ecological technology to enhance the environmental rehabilitation and protection to gather with conservation as a means of enhancing and supporting the restoration of the environmental ecosystems as well as to increase the rehabilitation and protection process through the creation of the community ecological technology that will help to influence, encourage and assist the communities protect, develop and conserve their natural environment, resources and Zanzibar beauty. This will lead to a reduction, and eventually a reversal, in the ecological degradation in Zanzibar. Among the targeted activities will include the introduction of efficient and improved energy-saving stoves by using available local technology, Reducing Emission from Deforestation and forest Degradation and Forest reserved is going to share a lot of issues with this project and therefore to earn sustainable success, practical mechanisms for reducing the use of forest resources and to preserve forests so that they may conserve carbon oxide gas. This will ensure that women benefit effectively from this project’s intervention and are well protected from the negative impacts of the project and to consider them (women) as very important members of the society (Women Empowerment).
- Community-Based Mari-culture Development Project
This is a Community Based Mari-culture Development project. The goal of the project is to support the restoration of the ocean’s ecosystems and improved the coastal natural resource management thereby improved the economic condition of poor families through training. Many families will be trained on the effective management of the marine natural resources’ ecosystems. The training will also focus on establishing new marine ecological technology and farming systems, create other family’s groups’ engagement in marine natural resources’ ecosystems management and establish and implement project effective participatory ecological monitoring system. Several aquaculture farming projects will be implemented. The main target group of this project (Direct Beneficiaries) are many families living in coastal areas in Zanzibar. Upon its accomplishment, the project will support the restoration of the ocean’s ecosystems and the coastal natural resources effectively. The management thereby will improve the economic condition of coastal and poor families in Zanzibar.
CURRENT CROSS-CUTTING ISSUES
- Saidia Project
This is a four years project which is designed to strengthen the social and economic empowerment of people with disabilities through advocacy initiatives and the establishment of disabled activists groups. The project will be implemented by Faraja Yetu Organization (FAYO) under the supervision of different stakeholders. It will be implemented in Zanzibar. The main objective of the project is to strengthen the social, economic and political empowerment of disabled people through the establishment of disabled clusters at shehia levels in Zanzibar so as to reinforce and widen the principles of democracy, human rights, the rule of law and good governance to persons with disabilities. The main beneficiaries are more than 10,000 People with Disabilities (PWDs). In its implementation, the project will apply an integrated approach of different stakeholders from local to national levels. It is expected that at the end of the project there will be the widening of the principles of democracy, human rights, the rule of laws and good governance as factors for the improved social, economic and political empowerment of People with Disabilities (PWDs). Ultimately, the project will help in the accomplishment of Sustainable Development Goals number 10 (Reduced inequality)
- Usawa Project
This is a gender-based reflective project initiated by the Faraja Yetu Organization (FAYO). This project is also reflected in women’s disadvantageous and unequal status in many areas including public life and decision-making. Gender discrimination and inequality, excessive poverty and backwardness, lack of representative voice, gender-based violence and exclusion from economic arenas. The project aims to improve Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment issues in Zanzibar. Finally, women have increased their opportunities to engage in social and economic aspects equally like men
- Vijana na kesho project (Youth economic Empowerment)
This five (5) years project aims at increasing the economic productivity of youths in the community; and improve their livelihoods through sustainable income-generating activities. It focuses on equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to access jobs and transition to the world of work. It will involve the provision of entrepreneurship development and capacity building activities to the youths and women in the community. The project provides young people with integrated entrepreneurship training, access to finance, business start-up and mentoring support. The main beneficiaries are 50,000 youths from Zanzibar who are in high demand for employment. The project will enable young people from both rural and urban areas to secure decent employment that is productive, delivers a fair income, and offers security in the workplace. Ultimately, the project will help in the accomplishment of Sustainable Development Goals number one (No Poverty), number 8 (Decent work and economic growth.) and number ten (Reduced inequality).
- Huruma Project
This is a humanitarian project that supports one of the heartbreaking humanitarian social problems. It gives more priority to the advocacy of disadvantaged and socially marginalized groups in the society like vulnerable children, widows, street children, homeless people, orphans, youths, people living with HIV/AIDS and many needy persons in the form of giving them both financial and or material supports. This project aims to develop solutions that will help these disadvantaged people in the communities to survive and then sustain their lives. The beneficiaries of the project are more than 89,999 disadvantaged and most vulnerable in the population groups. As the result of the project, the beneficiaries have to sustain their social developments, human well being and equally enjoy their humanities like other human beings.
